This summer, it’s never been easier to take care of your skin. The market is saturated with a number of skincare products infused with SPF—from oils to serums, there are a ton of options worth considering.
When it comes to skin protection, it’s no secret we need it all year round, but it’s especially important as the weather gets warmer. The bright UV rays are harmful to exposed skin, and although it’s common to shrug off using a product with extra protection (nobody wants to smell like sunscreen all day), it’s an essential habit we need to start making—every day. In this article, we’re breaking down what to look for in sunscreen while sharing our favourite picks. Let’s begin.
What To Look For In A Daily Sunscreen.
While it’s safest to cover up as much bare skin as possible, we know that summertime tanning at the beach can be unavoidable. When shopping for a sunscreen, consider using one with at least an SPF of 15 on your body and a higher SPF for sensitive areas like your face.
It’s also important to note that there are two types of sun protection products—one of which will be our focus today.
Chemical sunscreens are thin, lightweight formulas we’re used to. These sunscreens normally contain organic carbon-based compounds such as oxybenzone, octinoxate, octisalate and avobenzone—all ingredients that you won’t find in a physical or natural sunblock. These chemical sunscreens are absorbers that work by changing UV rays into heat, then releasing that heat from the skin—which in the long run may possibly cause more damage to your skin such as discoloration. Plus, most people don’t know that after applying, you have to wait 15-30 minutes before going out into the sun.
The second and more natural type is a physical sunscreen—it contains the active mineral ingredients titanium dioxide and/or zinc oxide, and they act as physical blockers by sitting on top of the skin to deflect damaging UV rays away from the skin. They’re a little thicker and might feel heavy at first, but we also found that they work really well if you choose the right one.
To make your sunscreen selection a little easier, here we round up a list of physical sunscreens that are worth the investment—because it's never too late to start protecting your skin!
LA ROCHE-POSAY
This dermatologist recommended SPF is perfect for sensitive skin or for those who need a tinted base to avoid the white cast that many find makes a sunscreen unwearable.

SHISEIDO
Shiseido makes a great lightweight formula, but we recommend this one for paler skin if you don’t want to work to cover up the slightly white film with makeup.
TARTE
Tarte makes an amazing mineral sunscreen that smells nice and fresh but not overwhelming. While a better option for dry skin, it’s meant for all skin types. Use it on light and dark skin tones and wait 5 minutes to watch it blend in seamlessly.
CLINIQUE
Clinique’s sunscreen has become a holy grail product for many—and for good reason. It’s a unique physical sunscreen that you won’t feel on your skin, and it’s more affordable!

JOSIE MARAN
Josie Maran makes 2 natural sunscreen products: one is tinted, and the other is the usual white formula. Choose one depending on your skin tone. We love the tinted version during summer because it blends in perfectly with bronzed skin. We’re also huge fans of Josie Maran Argan oils—they do wonders for the skin and this product does not fall short of that.
MURAD
With this being on the higher end of the scale in terms of price, you’d expect it to work wonders. And it does. If you want a natural mineral sunscreen that will truly work for every skin type, every concern, and every skin tone, Murad City Skin Age Defense is definitely worth checking out. No tacky feeling, no white cast, perfectly hydrating—it just ticks all of our ideal sunscreen boxes!
