Whether you’re in school or on your adult work grind, the summer is the best time to treat yourself with a spontaneous travel. You have time off, it’s warm, and all the tourist spots are at their prime.
So in order to push you towards a summer full on new experience, here are the top destinations to visit over the next few months.
Santorini, Greece
Those photos you see on Instagram of white housing and sky blue waters are even more beautiful in person. One of the most beautiful and romantic places on Earth, the Greek Islands are the place to be for your perfect fairy-tale getaway. The stunning architecture along with the bright blue colour of the Aegean sea will have you feeling like you’re in paradise. The island boasts exquisite cuisine, word class wine, and luxury hotels, all with the beautiful scenery as the backdrop. Wine lovers can indulge in local wine tasting at Santo Wines and see some of the best vineyards on the island. Take a tour from Fira and hike around the Santorini volcano, which is what gives the island its intense shape. The beauty of the island will have you waking up to a view that you’ll never get sick of, and the most breathtaking sunsets you’ll ever see.
London, England
As one of the oldest established cities in the world, the city of London holds a lot of history. Those who are familiar with the Royal Family can see where Queen Elizabeth herself lives, right at Buckingham Palace. Some of the world’s best museums are in London, many of which are free. The Gothic Revival architecture will make you feel like you’re back in the Victorian Era. Shopaholics will find Camden Market unique on its own, and we also encourage you to experience real afternoon tea while in London. Head over to London’s West End for top shows and plays in theatre, and visit famous landmarks such as the London Tower, the London Eye, Big Ben, and take a ride on one of the iconic red double-decker buses while you’re at it!
Amsterdam, Netherlands
Home of the Heineken beer, the small city of Amsterdam is home to the famous Canal Belt, a cultural trademark that is protected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. While the population continues to grow each year, the city revolves around urban cycling and most people get around by biking! Those who despise being stuck in traffic during rush hour won’t have to worry, as everything in the city is pretty much within walking distance and is easy for visitors to navigate between neighbourhoods. Passionate artists visiting the city can also learn the history of some of the Netherland’s most famous artists, including Vincent Van Gogh, Johannes Vermeer, and Rembrandt.
New York City, USA
One of the most well-known metropolitan cities in the world (hence why many movies take place in New York), New York City is a place that every traveler should check off on their travel list. There’s so much to see, whether you’re planning a day-trip or having an extended stay for a week. Love Broadway? Manhattan is home to 41 mainstream theatres scattered across Times Square, and your visit to New York isn’t valid unless you experience at least one Broadway show. Are you a foodie? Try and experience all the unique food creations that the city has to offer, like pizza in a pizza box. The catch? The box is also made out of pizza (yes, you heard me). Aside from shopping in SoHo, visit some of the famous filming locations where they filmed the iconic “Gossip Girl” series, such as Grand Central Station. As the city is also home to many famous celebrities, you’re bound to run into someone during their morning jog.
Berlin, Germany
With rich history and often referred to as the “party capital of Europe,” Berlin has lots to offer. Cheap drinks and the best DJs make an epic nightlife, and you have to spend at least one night partying away. The buzz around Berlin is real, and you’ll find that many bars and clubs don’t even have a closing time. During your stay, trying currywurst is a must. The city also contains monuments and museums that are dedicated and pay tribute to the victims of the tragedies that have occurred in the past, which has helped made the city into what it is today. Be sure to visit the Holocaust Memorial, Topography of Terror, and the remains of the Berlin Wall.
Tokyo, Japan
There’s a reason as to why Tokyo is one of the most popular places to visit, as it’s like visiting a whole new world. The city seems to be much ahead of its time compared to other places around the world, thanks to the advanced technology and fashion. The busy streets are always filled with people day and night, and what makes the region stand out is the mannerisms of the people around you, as the culture is known for being very polite. Anime and manga lovers should visit Akihabara, where many electronics and venues based on anime and video games take place. There’s even Pokémon Center for all your needs to become the next Pokémon master! For Instagram-worthy shots, head over to Harajuku and you’ll come across some of the most eye-catching fashion and style of locals there, as well as fun-themed cafes and shopping. The options of things to do in Tokyo are endless with never-ending entertainment surrounding you.
Seoul, Korea
Like Tokyo, Seoul is known for being ahead of its game when it comes to technology, especially since Korea is behind the creation of Apple’s biggest competitor, Samsung. Arguably the best city in the world for clubbing and nightlife, the music culture is on the rise (we see you, Black Pink and BTS). The city of Seoul is also known for being the place to shop for all trendsetters; head over to the shopping districts of Gangnam or Myeongdong for an unforgettable (and cheap!) shopping experience. Seoul also offers many quirky and cute themed cafés, including Charlie Brown and LINE Friends. Aside from the many attractions aimed towards younger tourists, Seoul also has an interesting culture and history that will make you appreciate the traditions it has to offer.
Los Angeles, California
For a true summer experience, spending it at the beach is where it’s at. With over 70 miles of coastline, head over to Santa Monica or Venice Beach where you can enjoy the sun and people-watch. Witness entertaining street performers as you shop and walk along the Santa Monica Pier to take in some amazing views. It’s a no-brainer that Potterheads need to visit The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, and fans of Hollywood will enjoy exploring Beverly Hills to relive their 90210 days. Walk alongside the Hollywood Walk of Fame and see if you can find your favourite celebrity’s star! Don’t forget to take a picture of the iconic Hollywood sign while you’re at it, as well as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art for your Instagram.
Edinburgh, Scotland
A city of festivals and arts, Edinburgh has been named the “World’s Leading Festival City,” for good reasons. With over 12 major annual festivals taking place each year, Scotland is a place that is very much alive. A city for book lovers, Edinburgh is known for its passion for arts and literature. You can visit the Writers’ Museum and even the suite in the luxurious Balmoral hotel, where author J.K. Rowling finished writing “Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows.” A main attraction that you can’t miss is the Edinburgh Castle, which stands out from the city with its beauty and history. Edinburgh brings together a fun mix of heritage, arts, and Scottish tradition that will make visitors feel like they’re home.
Paris, France
As one of the most romantic cities in the world, there’s no arguing that Paris will steal your heart. Take in the magnificent views of the City of Lights and some of the more scandalous advertisements on the streets that you wouldn’t see anywhere else (France isn’t shy when it comes to nudity). Get lost and explore the Louvre, which not only is the home to the well-known painting Mona Lisa but is the largest art museum in the world. It’s no secret that Paris offers some of the best macarons in the world, with French brand Ladurée being the largest macaron house in the world. Spend a nice quiet day sitting at a café on the streets of Paris and then head over to the iconic Eiffel Tower at night to witness the golden lights that sparkle amongst the tower!
