10 Decorative Items That Will Transform Your First Apartment

So you’re moving into your first apartment—congratulations! From one adult to another, we can confirm that it is going to be one of (if not THE) most fulfilling experiences of your life. Not to mention it’s an incredibly exciting shopping experience because it's your opportunity to create a comfortable space, a home that defines you and that serves as both aesthetically pleasing and functional.

Now as a new homeowner (or home renter!), it’s likely you've already checked the best bargains on Craigslist, at yard sales, and maybe your parents’ old furniture sitting in the extra room. However, sometimes all the borrowed or pre-owned stuff isn't enough, sometimes you want or need decor that is truly your own. To help you save time surfing the web for that perfect decor, we’ve done the research and piled together a list of essential items. Some super affordable and some are just worth a little splurge—but all of them will transform your space.

Sofa Cushions

Stick with neutrals or add a pop of colour with these throw pillows. The crochet design adds style to your living room and the soft tones will compliment any furniture.

Modern Rug

This soft wool rug is a great addition to any home—it’s perfect for smaller apartments as you can choose the size that works best for your living space. Plus, the backing has a nice grip so it won’t be slipping and sliding on hardwood floors. You may not even need fuzzy slippers this winter…your rug will do the trick of keeping your feet toasty.

Ladder Bookshelf

We love a chic piece that instantly pulls together an empty space. This ladder shelving unit is definitely not your typical bookshelf and we can hear it calling our name. You can customize it according to your style of course, but we recommend lots of visual books and magazines for guests, plants, candles, framed photographs, and vases. Dress it up as much as you’d like or leave it looking minimal. That’s the great thing about having your own apartment—you can make executive decisions!

Greenery

Whether you’re a plant person or just someone who appreciates some green aesthetic, we can guarantee that a few potted plants around your apartment will create a radiant environment. Sometimes it’s nice to be able to take care of something and watch it grow, but for those of you who don’t have the time, try a more practical planter. We love this simple and affordable faux potted plant. It’s small enough to fit on any surface, and yes, it most certainly is from Canadian Tire! Check if it’s available near you and grab it quick—your shelves need some colour.

Throw Blanket

Can anyone even survive a full winter without cozy blankets? While you’re Netflix and snacking, this white faux fur blanket will do a great job of keeping you warm. If white and furry is not your style, opt for a stylish patterned throw with tassels. They’ll both create a warm feel to your apartment that will make you never want to leave your sofa.

Floor Lamp

Apartments don’t always have the greatest lighting, especially when it’s 8pm and you realize you still need to finish a few tasks before heading to bed. We love a good floor lamp that serves as both a decorative piece and obviously great lighting. Ikea is the way to go here, ladies and gentlemen—the RANARP comes in two shades and has a vintage feel to it with its unique gold steel joints. This classic will never go out of style.

Mirrors

Should you prefer a minimal approach, skip the dozens of frames that you may have felt the urge to hang in every room of your apartment. Instead, add some funky mirrors to a large empty wall—they can create a lot more depth. These handcrafted Peruvian mirrors will surely be enough to add a distinctiveness to your apartment. And if your new home is rather small, create the illusion of a wider space using large mirrors. A tall floor mirror will definitely do the trick. Our favourite places to shop for full size decorative mirrors are Winners and Home Sense!

Tabletop Décor

You can be creative with this one and use any decorative items you deem necessary. As previously mentioned, we love anything multi-functional. A good looking tray like this can spice up even the most simple coffee table. It’s round and comes in three polished colours: white, gold, and silver. The best part is that it sits on your table as holder for other items, but it can also be used to serve drinks and snacks when guests visit.

Nightstand

Don’t forget about your bedroom! A simple room can be totally transformed with this awesome brass nightstand that fits just the right amount of bedside necessities. We love the vintage vibes, it's a look that we just can’t say no to.

Candle holders

Simons is definitely a go-to Canadian department store, and their home décor is one of the most underrated. It’s both elegant and affordable, and they always seem to be on trend. We went online digging and found a few favourites, but the candles stood out most. Choose from teal or gold embossed glass to create a warm atmosphere with this stylish tabletop lantern. Its unique shape and gold handle is giving us cozy autumnal vibes—and since fall is just around the corner, add a pack of these red tea lights to your Simons cart or pick up a scented pack from Ikea.

Try to have fun with these décor tips and make sure you really love your picks! Ultimately, you want to choose the right furniture and decorative items for you because you’ll see them all the time. This is your first apartment—take your time deciding but don’t over-spend on too many purchases! Having more is not necessarily going to make your apartment look and feel better.
