Trend Watch: Utility Jumpsuits

The utilitarian jumpsuit is a very exciting 2019 trend particularly for it's comfort and how easy it is to wear, pack and style. It's an effortless statement piece and one of my favourite trends to wear this year. I had originally planned on getting one in a dark khaki, but after passing by Top Shop and seeing this denim one, I had to have it.

I learned the trick with these jumpsuits is to not to focus too much on the type of fabric, but more so on the weight and texture. The thicker the fabric the better and watch out for too much spandex because you want it to effortlessly fit to your body so it doesn't feel like a skin tight cat woman costume. A major stylist tip, stick to “utility” style fabrics – think anything you might wear on a motorcycle, or yes – to a construction job.

Jumpsuit: Top Shop

Necklaces & Bralette: Forever 21

Shoes: Aldo

For the styling of this jumpsuit, I wanted to lean toward the minimal end of things so that the jumpsuit was the focal point. For this denim jumper I paired it with feminine accessories for balance. A simple white lace bralette with a layered necklace was the perfect touch but I also wanted it to cinch in at the waist. After trying a bunch of belts and feeling like nothing was working, I just took a white dress shirt and tied it around my waist. It finished the silhouette and complimented the “white/delicate” theme I was trying to achieve.

I love this trend and because we still have a many cold weeks ahead, I will be experimenting with other types of utility jumpsuits in other fabrics. Check out how I wore this denim one above!
