Trend Watch: The Oversized Denim Jacket

Oversized pieces like joggers, tracksuits, and jackets have become a prominent trend in fashion over the past few months. Thankfully for us girls who live in places where winters are always cold and snowy, oversized is a trend sent from fashion gods to keep us warm and cozy while still looking chic.

Now when it comes to denim, it's been a staple fabric always crowding up our wardrobes. However, you'll notice over time that the fit, piece type and function that we utilize it for, will change. Right now, it's less about denim bottoms and more about wearing denim on top with a more oversized look. For the upcoming season I've been loving this trend and have been finding any excuse to wear my favourite oversized denim jacket. If you're looking to try the denim trend, you've come to the right place. In this article, I'm sharing my secret to finding the most authentic oversized denim jacket.

You may not be a thrifter or a vintage shopper but if you have EVER had that little tickle in your gut that says you want to try it. This is the place to start. And before you say it, yes you can get an oversized denim jacket from a fast fashion shop like Zara, however, it's more than likely over priced and it won't quite have that retro, thick authentic denim look that is super in right now. If you don't live near a vintage shop try hitting up a Value Village, you never know what you can find until you walk in and browse for at least 10 minutes. Mine (pictured above) is from Black Market in Toronto (my favourite thrift shop) and it feels like it was made for me. You really can't go wrong by sizing up, if you're usually a Small or Medium try going for an XL or even an XXL, if the arms are too baggy you can always roll the sleeves up - the big shoulders and length are elements of the jacket you should be looking for. Find one that is a nice fit but a little too dark? Throw it in the wash with some bleach or let is soak in the sink with warm water and bleach. It'll lighten up and give it that unique flare.

For spring 2019 I really consider the oversized denim jacket a staple. And if you end up scoring yours at a thrift shop it'll be the best $10 you've ever spent! If you're looking for more inspo, check out my Instagram to see some more ways that I've worn it! The outfits are virtually endless.
