Now that we’re past the holiday season, the next big event that many of us will be looking forward to is Valentine’s Day. Love it or hate it, the day to celebrate all things love is now less than a month away. For singles it can be a great time to gather with friends, and for couples it’s a nice reminder that we can all go out of our way to make our partner happy.
I’m all about taking any opportunity to show my sweetheart that I care (Valentine’s Day included), but that doesn’t have to mean an extravagant gift or night on the town. If you’re looking for a fun and affordable way to get into the Valentine’s spirit this year, here are 8 date ideas that won’t break the bank!
Down Home Cooking
Cooking can be an easy and fun activity to try together, as long as you both keep your expectations in check. There may be a few bumps along the road, but working together and bonding over a home-cooked meal is a recipe for a successful Valentine’s Day.
Hit the Trails
Getting outdoors in the dead of winter may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but finding a nearby hiking trail is a great way to get some exercise and try something new together.
Ice, Ice Baby
Another outdoor activity that gets your endorphins going is a trip to your local skating rink. Another bonus – if you bring your own skates and the cost of this date is basically free! Just lace them up and hit the ice hand in hand for a guaranteed romantic date.
Sweet Treats
One of my favourite ways to spend a chilly night in has to be baking some sweet treats! You can get creative with your designs a whip up some Valentine’s themed cookies or cupcakes, and if there are any leftovers, you might even consider sharing them with others.
Make Picasso Proud
Hit the dollar store for some paint and canvas, and pick a subject. You can unleash your inner Bob Ross by following along with a tutorial, or let your creativity take over as you both get into the Valentine’s spirit.
Popcorn Picks
Movies and popcorn are a classic date night activity, and for good reason. For a change of pace from the usual Netflix and chill routine, put together a list of both your favourite movies and enjoy a Valentine’s movie marathon.
Night at the Museum
Many cultural institutions offer discounted rates for students, or even free admission nights to the general public. Check in with the museum of your choice for the best times to visit at a discounted price, and the two of you can enjoy the sights without hurting your wallet.
Starlight, Starbright
Head outside the city and set up a spot where you can spend the evening looking up into the sky. Apps like SkyView or Night Sky can help you spot constellations and enjoy the view while cuddling up together.
