Pascal Labelle - the Canadian fashion designer who isn't afraid of being different. Edgy and bold he took Toronto Fashion Week by storm showcasing his Summer and Spring 2018 collection, and yes we're obsessed.
For those of you who don't know, the brand Pascal Labelle Designs emerged in 2005 when Pascal began creating custom made coats. Based out of Quebec, with a focus on leather and fur his various designs are unique and bold. Totally rockstar worthy, and definitely meant to make a statement.
This past week watching his show I was blown away, the detail and craftsmen ship that was put into his pieces was impeccable. Not only was his collection dynamic, but each piece showcases the clients personality and story. Think of them as almost as an extension of the person wearing it. Amazing, right? Well, that's his whole motto, to unify difference and to showcase each persons story.
After his show we reached out to him, I mean, Pascal encapsulates so many of the great qualities that we believe in. ..... And thankfully he was more than happy to answer our questions. Seriously, he's an amazing person. ...
So without further ado here is out interview with Canadian fashion designer Pascal Labelle:
1) If you could describe the brand "Pascal Labelle" in one sentence, how would you describe it?
United by difference. This short sentence is so important to our brand since it represents our values (we are seeking diversity in all of its forms), our mission and what Pascal Labelle tries to incorporate in all of its coats.
2) What was the main source of inspiration for your SS18 collection?
Our main inspiration is edginess. I wanted to bring Pascal Labelle creations to another level. We focused on the textiles, the textures and the details of each coats.
3) When you go through the process of castings and choosing the models to wear/represent your clothing, what do you look for?
This is easy! We are looking for « uniqueness ». Our brand ambassadors are the likes of Eve Salvail, Paul Mason, etc. We need models that will balance such powerful personalities, so we are looking for models who also have personality or possess something different. Our final decision is usually when we meet them since the energy of the person is so important.
4) One of the great things I love about your work is the fact that you design your pieces to be one-of-a-kind, they're unifying and different. What made you take this direction of designing?
I was always very inspired by people stories, values and personalities. So, it was very natural for me to create pieces that would tell their stories. I was lucky enough too to be surrounded by all kind of amazing and crazy in the best way people which gave me the ability to discover a unity through differences.
5) Walk me through your creative process. What does designing a unique piece take?
It is important for me to meet the person, to discuss with her so I can have a good feeling (or a vibe) about the person. Then, I create an inspiration board and present it to the person. We then decides on the coat the person feels the most connected to. I then create it with the person measures. They are a few fittings to make sure the coat fits the person perfectly. Finally, I always add a little personal touch to the piece to make it even more unique.
6) What do you see for the future of Pascal Labelle designs?
I see very big things. We are launching a RTW online collection October 15th that will make the Pascal Labelle brand much more available to everybody. We also have a few fashion shows in the next year and many projects on the go. The next year will not be relaxing but that’s what makes it so exciting.
7) What is your advice for young designers or entrepreneurs who are trying to break into the industry?
Perseverance, perseverance, perseverance…..and believe in yourself!
Now lets get a little personal
1) How would you describe your style? Who is your style icon?
I’m a very t-shirt and jeans type of guy with a nice jacket ;-) I like simplicity in my day-to-day looks. I have so many style icons but Lenny Kravitz, Zoë Kravitz, Pharrell Williams... all the authentic stylish person.
2) What can you be found doing when you're not designing?
I’m designing again and again.. just kidding. I have a very crazy schedule but I always take time to be with my family and to play with my kids. You can find me playing hockey with my son Dubaï and doing gym with my daughter Keonie Choco.
